Nigeria’s MSMEs are the backbone of the economy—making up 96% of all registered businesses, contributing 45% of national GDP, and employing 84% of the workforce. In the South-East alone, over 3.6 million MSMEs drive regional growth, especially in light manufacturing (footwear, textiles, furniture) and trade (Ariaria International Market, Onitsha Main Market), which account for more than 60% of MSME activities.
In 2023, the South-East generated ₦18.4 trillion in GDP, with MSMEs powering much of that output. Light manufacturing contributed ₦3.2 trillion (17%), while wholesale and retail trade added ₦4.1 trillion (22%). These numbers prove the immense potential of our MSME ecosystem.
Yet, a critical challenge remains, digital adoption.
The Digital Divide in the South-East
Despite its entrepreneurial strength, the South-East trails behind other regions in harnessing digital tools. According to the 2024 GSMA Mobile Connectivity Index, the region scored just 42.3/100—the lowest among Nigeria’s six zones. While 45% of MSMEs in the South-West leverage e-commerce, only 28% in the South-East do the same.
The Broadband Commission Nigeria Report (2023) highlights key barriers:
- Limited broadband penetration (only 34% of MSME premises have reliable internet).
- High costs of digital tools and services.
- Low digital literacy across business owners and employees.
- This digital gap constrains productivity, restricts market access, and weakens resilience in times of shock.
At Bridge4Scale, we believe the future of the South-East economy is digital. With the MDP, we’re making sure no business is left behind.
Bridge4Scale’s MSME Digitalization Program (MDP)
To close this gap, Bridge4Scale is launching the MSME Digitalization Program (MDP)—a bold initiative designed to equip 3,000 MSMEs in manufacturing across the South-East with the digital backbone they need to thrive.
The MDP will deliver:
- Hands-on digital skills training tailored for MSMEs.
- Provision of essential digital tools to modernize operations.
- Subsidized broadband access to ease connectivity costs.
- Mentorship and support networks to sustain transformation.
- Driving Measurable Impact
Our mission is to bridge the gap between traditional manufacturing practices and the digital future. We are committed to ensuring that manufacturing MSMEs in South-East Nigeria are not left behind in the digital economy.
By empowering businesses to embrace digital transformation, Bridge4Scale is ensuring that the South-East does not just participate in Nigeria’s digital economy—but leads it.
